2008 Bald Eagle

What do ya think of these? I'll probably grab 1 or 2 proof's at the introductory offer of $39.95, just because. I got the US Mint flyer today and the coin looks pretty good.

I'm buying 2 proofs tomorrow morning for the introductory offer of 39.95.
I always like to buy two of anything, so if I like them, I can sell one and keep one. Good value? Who knows?

It doesn't tell you the content anywhere, does it?
And what does "Clad" mean? Plated?

The silver is being offered at about 2.5 times the spot price..... so I don't know about this.

Check the website in the morning. I believe the gold bald eagle is a 22k 1/4 oz
I like the silver baldie

"Clad" means there is no silver. It has a copper core with nickel surfaces. It is the standard construction for the circulating US dimes, quarters and half dollars.

Don't waste your time buying one. :thumpdown

The bald eagle silver dollar looks really nice.

Re: 2008 Bald Eagle

The $5 commemoratives are usually 1/4 ounce of gold. It is funny that the web site doesn't specify it anywhere that I can see.

The gold coin has a nice design but I like the silver dollar better.

I'm not promoting these as the next great investment but here are the specifics on them as they go on sale today.

Turner-son 01-15-2008 09:09 AM

Re: 2008 Bald Eagle

The $5 commemoratives all have the same specs as the old half eagles ($5). So, 22k (or is it .900 pure?), 0.24187 ounces of pure gold.

Am I missing something or do these not say gold (or silver) on them? I know this might be silly, but I want my gold coins to be stamped saying "gold" or whatever.

Re: 2008 Bald Eagle

The Bald Eagle Commemorative Coins will be available in six individual coin options: a $5 gold coin, a silver dollar coin, and a half-dollar clad coin each available in proof and uncirculated versions. Also available will be a Three-Coin Proof Set, a Coin and Medal Set, and a Young Collector's Set. Additionally, later this year, the annual United States Mint American Legacy CollectionTM will feature a Bald Eagle Proof Silver Dollar.

silverJeep 01-15-2008 12:24 PM

Re: 2008 Bald Eagle

Typically the $5 gold coin is 1/10 of an ounce. Doubt they would change that weight for one coin.

Not a bargin in my book.

Just went to their website, and found the following:

"Because of a transition in service providers, the United States Mint online catalog is currently unavailable. We expect the online catalog to be back in service within the next couple of days. In the interim, our toll-free customer service number will continue to be available to our customers.

To place an order, or to inquire about the status of an order, please call 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Customer Service Representatives will be available to assist you from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight (ET), seven days a week. Hearing- and speech-impaired customers may place orders and inquiries through TTY at 1-888-321-MINT (6468), Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (ET).

The Bald Eagle Commemorative Coin Program will be available for sale as scheduled, starting January 15, 2008, at 12:00 noon (ET). You may place orders via our toll-free numbers and through mail order. Information about the Bald Eagle Commemorative Coin product options and household limit information can be found in our press release in our online press room."

Thinking about buying the three coin proof set, with one per household this may be worth it.

Re: 2008 Bald Eagle

As turner-son said, $5 commemoratives all have the same composition and gold content as the old (pre-1933) gold coins, or .2418 oz, a little bit less than 1/4 ozt.

The silver commemorative dollars are the same composition and silver content as old Morgan and Peace dollars, which is .77xx ozt of 90% silver.

I ordered mine on my lunch break today at about noon. It took me 25 minutes and at least 50 redials to get through. I've never said "one" so many times in such a short period.

I ordered myself the 3 coin proof set. I can't wait to get these :) I don't really care if they end up selling at a higher premium or not. I just think they are really gorgeous coins.

There seems to be strong popularity on this series. I'm not sure which coins will sell out first, but it's looking good to sell out quickly.
Maybe those that love US Mint products have been holding cash from the abandoned Spouse and Plat 10th series have turned to this one?
Also, I think, with a 100 per household limit on these...the Home Shopping network and dealers will be snapping them up, since the last two series were only 1 per household.

Telephone lines still slammed this AM (Thursday). After 6-8 tries, I did hit #2 and was able to order without problems through the order tracking line. I got 2 silver proofs. The lady who took my order told me that they are still slammed with orders on the series.

I hope they can figure how to get their act together, the 06 reverse proofs, the Liberty gold spouse and now this.

justabeginner 01-17-2008 12:43 PM

Re: 2008 Bald Eagle

I think the 3 coin set is a no brainer. Only one per household. Only 25000 made. Get it if you don't get anything else from the series.

Actually I believe it's the same as the traditional half-eagle ($5 gold piece) like the ones the US made before FDR stole all the gold. Which would make it 90% gold, 8.359 grams, net 0.24187 troy ounces pure gold.

(Which reminds me of a pet peeve of mine--an "eagle" is properly ten dollars. The system was originally, ten mills to the cent, ten cents to the dime [have you noticed the word "dime" is actually stamped on the coin?], ten dimes to the dollar, ten dollars to the eagle (and extended in the late 1800s to ten eagles to the union). Calling all bullion coins regardless of weight, nominal denomination, or the metal they are made of "eagles" is basically a modern-day bogosity.)

Re: 2008 Bald Eagle

I suspect these will be a hotter item on ebay than most typical commemoratives simply because the word 'eagle' is in the title. Anyone searching for SAEs or GAEs is bound to stumble upon these sets in their search. Other commemorative coins or sets won't be seen unless you are searching for them specifically. I'm glad I ordered my 3 coin set. It's a shame I couldn't order 2.

EE_ 01-19-2008 12:27 AM

Re: 2008 Bald Eagle

I believe about 35,000 orders have been taken so far.
The 3 coin sets will be toast in a few days, if not already. Next, the silver proof will sellout, with dealers buying a hunderd at a pop and the 25,000 that got eaten up in the set.
The 1st spouse series (except the Liberty, which I still have faith in)) and the platinum 10th anniversary sets are a big flop! The Bald Eagle seems to be the next mint sensation, so you better grab a couple silver proof's soon to throw in the hoard! I think it's a good bet!

I just picked up 1 silver dollar proof and 1 uncirculated. I'm more of a bullion person but enjoy collecting some of the nicer silver dollars. This one imo is the nicest one since the 2001 Buffalo.

Dont feel bad if you that seemed pricey for one ounce of silver. I just picked up a Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle from a coin show today.

Wouldn't it be easier to just send in a order to the Mint via mail? I got tired of trying to get through and just mailed in my order for the 3 coin proof set.

That's why I ordered the three coin set, I was hesitant about ordering the one reverse proof set I got from the mint for a whopping $100 and now I reaize that I should have bought all I could!:bull-buddy-icon:

Decided to pick up a proof dollar and 3-coin set. The website is quoting a March 1st shipping date.

The proof is for me (love the way it looks!) and the set will hopefully go for a profit on Ebay in a few months.

I ordered some proof SAE's today and I added 1 proof silver Bald Eagle and 1 Unc. silver Bald Eagle to my order. They look very nice but the premium is just too high to order very many of them. The proof SAE's are 31.95 now! My Bald Eagles are on back order with a ship date of 3/1. I will just have to wait and see if I get them or not.
